CHARLES BRIDGE

JOINING TWO HALVES OF THE CITY.

The Charles Bridge has been joining the two sides of Prague since the 14th century and is still for pedestrians only, which makes it one of the town's major attractions for tourists and beloved by Prague inhabitants. The monument straddles the Vltava, connecting Old Prague to the Malá Strana neighbourhood.

The Vltava River shaped the face of Prague, forming islands and meanders. In the early fourteenth century, the Judith Bridge crossed the river but was washed away in a flood in 1342.

Charles IV decided in 1357 that a new bridge must be built. In 1402, the Charles Bridge was completed.

Stretching 515m in length, it provided a means of communication between the two sides and is flanked by two towers, whose silhouette has become a symbol of the city.

You will no doubt cross the bridge several times during your stay in Prague and discover another detail of its famous statues each time.
