The origins of the cathedral date back to the early Middle Ages. The current building dates from the twelfth century and has retained the original crenellations and twin towers, though the latter have incorporated later additions from the eighteenth centuries.
Over the centuries, numerous modifications have altered the look of the building: the facade was pierced with a Gothic rose and a cloister was added in the fourteenth century. The altar piece and rococo threshold were added in the eighteenth century.
A visit to this monument illustrates the changing relations to the sacred in Portuguese society.
