TRAFALGAR SQUARE

A COMEMORATIVE SQUARE.

The construction of Trafalgar Square began in 1820. This new monument would commemorate the victory of Admiral Nelson over Napoleon in 1805 at the battle of Trafalgar (a victory over the French that the British like to keep in mind). Architect John Nash designed a tall column topped with a statue of Nelson himself, keeping watch over the entire square atop a base of four massive bronze lions (sculpted by Sir Edwin Landseer).

The square is bordered by St-Martin in the Fields church and the National Gallery.
