Since 2003 the imperial city of Thang Long in Hanoi has been listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO. The imperial city was built in the eleventh century by the Viêt Ly Dynasty on the ruins of a Chinese citadel in Hanoi.
The citadel was the seat of political power in the region for a period spanning thirteen centuries.
This structure represents thirteen centuries of history encompassing the Lê Dynasty, French colonisation and the Nguyen Dynasty.
