The Temple of Heaven or Tiantan in the centre of Beijing is one of the city's most famous monuments. The temple was built in 1420 in the eighteenth year of Emperor Ming Yongle's reign. In imperial Chinese tradition the emperor was seen as the son of heaven.
The Temple of Heaven includes many spiritual places such as the Prayer Hall for the Harvest, the Abode of The Lord of Heaven and the Alter of Heaven. The temple has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1998.
